We are a Spanish couple who ventured in the Caribbean. We restored a 16th century house in ruins into a minimalist retreat. It was once the first hospital in the Americas, San Nicolás Bari (1503, UNESCO heritage). After years of hosting experience in Spain, we dreamed on a space for independent travelers and events.
We like to call FIXIE a slow traveler retreat, as the garden, courtyard and sundecks invite to lay back.
The pool seems to be the star. Settled below original archway from XVI century, makes it a barefoot luxury, while listening to the parrots on the avocado tree.
It took us 2.5 years to renovate this historic house with a modern twist. AD magazine described the architecture as «planned austerity». Earthy walls, terra cotta bricks and mahogany from the roof: we wanted natural finishings for a raw tactile experience. Local artisans crafted our rattan lounge chairs and cacti pots.
Our high ceiling apartments each offer a kitchen and ensuite bathroom. Interiors are serene and minimal. The warm tones and natural textures help to connect with yourself. Film photography on anthropology topics is featured. We took them around the world.
Take a morning ride by the ocean, on one of our classic bikes. Find outdoor salsa venues, cobblestone paved streets, Renaissance balconies…the oldest city in the Americas is pretty. Santo Domingo is close to Caribbean beaches as easy getaways. If you plan to stay for longer, Fixie may be the hub for your adventures, or just laze by the pool.
