We are a Spanish couple who ventured in the Caribbean and restored a 1500’s villa into a minimalist retreat. Its archway and walls belong to the 1st hospital in the Americas, San Nicolás Bari (1503, UNESCO World Site).
After years of hosting professionally in Spain, we dreamed to create a slow life experience addressed to independent conscious travelers.
«They took a historic building…and transformed it into a luxury retreat,» FORBES (March, 2021)
We like to call FIXIE a slow traveler retreat, as the garden, courtyard and sundecks invite to lay back.
The pool, settled below original archway from 16th century, seems to drag all the attention.
«The courtyard and archway were once part of a hospital built in 1503, now take on a Roman-bath feel, shading the pool as parrots call from the avocado tree above» CN TRAVELLER (Editor’s list 2020)
It took us 2.5 years to restore this historic building. AD magazine described the architecture as «planned austerity». Earthy walls, terra cotta bricks and mahogany from the roof: we wanted natural finishings for a raw tactile experience.
«The couple was also committed to hiring local, Dominican artisans to craft bespoke rattan-and-steel chairs and cast pots for the cacti garden, instead of sourcing from overseas. « FORBES (March 2021)
Guest rent a loft apartment inside a private villa, and only guests have access.
Our light filled lofts (40 m2 to 70 m2 ) each offer a kitchen and ensuite bathroom. Interiors are serene and minimal. Warm tones and natural textures help you to connect.
«As bed headboards, film photography artwork by the owner sparkles.» ELLE Decor (May 2021)
Take a morning ride by the ocean, on one of our classic bikes. Find outdoor salsa venues, cobblestone paved streets, Renaissance balconies…the oldest city in the Americas is pretty. Santo Domingo is close to Caribbean beaches as easy getaways. If you plan to stay for longer, Fixie may be the hub for your adventures, or just laze by the pool.
